Most of the work I have produced for CNC milling has been completed for the motor sport and automotive industries.

This process is normally to work backwards from a completed piece of geometry until the point where the billet is placed within the mill. This could include numerous steps depending on the complexity of the geometry.

A simple support removal process can be seen below, this is created by adding additional geometry that is linked to the original file, this is then slow removed to the point that it can be snapped away from the base support.
